SUMMARY
Anti‑patterns are not mistakes, they are signals.They emerge under pressure, constraint, cognitive load, habit or inherited practice, revealing how delivery systems actually behave.
Some are adaptive and stabilising; others are unexamined drift. The behaviour itself is not the problem, the absence of inspection is.
Anti‑patterns often trigger knee‑jerk reactions because they look like deviation.
Orthodoxy, fear of judgement and textbook literalism cause teams to treat all deviation as harmful, collapsing nuance and making adaptation appear dysfunctional. Yet many anti‑patterns are rational responses to real constraints.
The critical distinction is between conscious adaptation (intentional, contextual, stabilising) and unconscious drift (accidental, invisible, risky). From the outside they look identical, which is why misclassification is common and often harmful.
